
Starting a pet business is often portrayed online as something easy. You’ll see videos and posts talking about “being your own boss”, working with animals every day, and turning a love of pets into a successful business. While there’s truth in that, what many people don’t talk about enough is that building a successful pet business takes time, patience, consistency, and resilience. It’s far more of a marathon than a sprint.
When I started Tcpetcare back in 2019, I certainly didn’t become established overnight. Like many new business owners, I had moments where I expected things to grow faster than they did. The reality was very different. There were slow periods, uncertainty, and times where it felt like I was putting in a huge amount of effort for very little visible reward.
Then, only months after starting, the pandemic arrived. Suddenly, the world changed overnight. Restrictions, lockdowns, uncertainty and concern about contact with other people hit the pet care industry hard. Like many small businesses, it would have been easy to give up at that point. But getting through that period taught me some of the most valuable business lessons I’ve ever learned — patience, adaptability, and the importance of simply continuing to move forward even when progress feels painfully slow.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that trust takes time to build, especially in the pet care industry. Pet owners are not just handing over money — they’re trusting someone with a member of their family. That kind of trust is earned gradually through consistency, reliability, professionalism, and reputation. There’s no shortcut for that.
I’ve also learned that not every business idea works out, and that’s okay. Before Tcpetcare, I tried other businesses including an online bookshop, a book editing business, and a genealogy research business. None of them succeeded long term, but every single one taught me something valuable. Looking back now, I can see that even the businesses that “failed” helped build the experience, resilience and mindset I later needed to establish a successful pet care business.
Another important lesson is that business success is not always about being the loudest person in the room. Modern business culture often celebrates extroverted personalities and overnight success stories, but many businesses are quietly built over time by people who simply keep going, keep learning, and keep improving things steadily behind the scenes. As someone who is naturally more introverted myself, I’ve learned that consistency and patience often matter more than hype or trying to appear successful overnight.
That same mindset is something I’m now bringing into PetProHub. I have no illusions that building a new platform will happen quickly. Establishing trust, building visibility, improving SEO, gaining listings, and growing awareness all take time. But real businesses are usually built steadily over years, not weeks.
If you’re thinking about starting your own pet business, my advice would be simple: be patient with yourself, focus on building trust and reputation slowly, and don’t judge your progress too harshly in the early stages. Success rarely happens overnight, but consistent effort over time can gradually build something far more sustainable and meaningful.
A marathon is slower than a sprint, but it’s also what gets you to the finish line.
